Monday May 15th 2023 | In this lesson we continue with the MO-Diagram of Ammonia, we will use a simple visualization technique to get insight into the linear combinations that are used to construct the symmetry adapted linear combinations. We will show how to use these SALS to construct the MO-diagram and how to obtain the corresponding molecular orbitals. Based on this knowledge we are able to construct the MO-diagram of more complexe molecules (e.g., PF6(-)), were we discovered that d-orbitals are not necessary in hyper-valent compounds. Finally, we made the early start with the MO-diagram of organic molecules, where we started by analyzing ethylene, which will be part of the next lecture.
