Tuesday June 14th 2022 | In this class we revised the effects of orbital mixing, which occurs when atomic orbitals have the appropriate symmetry and energy. We specifically looked on how p-orbitals can be polarized by mixing in s-character of the s-orbital and how d-orbitals are polarized when p-character is mixed from the p-orbitals. The polarization has strong effects on the formation of lone-pair orbitals which are instrumental in binding different molecules such as protons (acid/base) or olefins (metals Lewis Acid/Base).
