Wednesday June 12 | Because in the previous lesson, construction of the MO-Diagram of ammonia was not shown on camera, I have uploaded a worked example showing all the step necessary to construct the MO-diagram of ammonia. It’s important to understand this part as it contains the most fundamental aspects of this course, we learn how to use the character table to determine the symmetry adapted linear combinations (SALCs) of grouped orbitals. These SALCs will form the basis from which can construct the MO-diagram. We will learn specifically how to combine the SALCs with the atomic orbitals on nitrogen and how the resulting Molecular Orbitals can be visualized. Finally by analyzing the HOMO and the LUMO obtained from the MO-diagram, we can start making prediction about the chemistry.
